Masahiro Shiga leads the firm’s Japan law real estate practice. He has extensive experience in acquisitions and dispositions, financings, joint ventures and developments. He has advised on the acquisition of numerous real estate projects throughout Japan, with an aggregate purchase price exceeding ¥800 billion.
Recent transactions include the representation of:
- Morgan Stanley Japan Limited in the acquisition of the corporate headquarters of Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in Tokyo;
- a joint venture between Morgan Stanley Japan Limited and Starwood Capital in the acquisition of the 438-room Westin Hotel in Tokyo; and
- Colony Capital Asia Pacific in the acquisition of the Fukuoka Dome, the largest domed stadium in Japan; the Seahawk Hotel and the Hawkstown Mall from The Daiei, Inc. The transaction included restructuring ¥60 billion debt with 35 financial institutions.
Mr. Shiga also has represented various lenders in nonrecourse securitizable loans and bond issuance, worth more than ¥300 billion, secured or backed by properties, trust beneficiary interests and nonperforming loan portfolios in Japan.
Leasing transactions that Mr. Shiga has worked on include the representation of Credit Suisse First Boston Securities (Japan) Limited in leasing its Japan headquarters.
Mr. Shiga has been a guest lecturer at seminars, including a seminar on real estate securitization given by the Bank of Japan. In addition, he was selected for inclusion in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2008, Chambers Asia: Asia’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2009 and Asia Pacific Legal 500, 2006-2007.
