Our History

Founded as a three-lawyer shop in Manhattan in 1948, Skadden rose to prominence in the ’60s and ’70s by taking on the proxy fights and hostile tender offers that white-shoe law firms deemed “ungentlemanly.”  We leveraged our success in that area to build one of the world’s preeminent law firms, offering clients in every major international financial center solutions to the most challenging legal issues in virtually every area of corporate law.

American Lawyer 'Dealmakers of the Year'

The American Lawyer named four Skadden attorneys — more than any other firm — as "Dealmakers of the Year" and recognized three transactions that Skadden advised on — more than any other firm — in its coverage (March 30, 2015).

Skadden's "Dealmakers of the Year" are:

  • New York corporate finance partner Andrea Nicolas, for advising NextEra Energy Partners, LP on its $467 million yieldco IPO.
  • Chicago M&A partner Rodd Schreiber, for counseling Hillshire Brands Company in its $8.6 billion unsolicited acquisition by Tyson Foods, Inc.
  • New York M&A partner Paul Schnell and Washington, D.C. M&A partner Jeremy London, for guiding Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. in its unsolicited, but subsequently agreed upon, $1.8 billion acquisition by The Men's Wearhouse, Inc.

According to the magazine, the deals "spotlight creative thinking, novel approaches and innovative work."

Décideurs 2015 Disputes and Tax Rankings

Skadden was listed as a leading firm in the disputes and tax rankings released by French directory Décideurs in the areas of commercial disputes; financial disputes; disputes concerning the operations of French-listed companies, the Financial Markets Authority and the Prudential Supervisory Authority; international group tax; and transactions tax.

Dealogic 2015 Global M&A League Tables

Skadden ranked first in M&A deals by value and number globally for the second consecutive month, advising in February 2015 on 15 matters totaling $55.19 billion in value, according to data from Dealogic reported by Law360. For the first two months of 2015, the firm advised on 37 deals totaling $151.94 billion in value.

Real Estate Finance & Investment Financing Awards

Skadden was named the leading law firm for real estate financing at the inaugural Real Estate Finance & Investment Financing Awards (February 4, 2015) for "demonstrated exceptional performance, customer satisfaction and innovation over the past 12 months."
