Our History

Founded as a three-lawyer shop in Manhattan in 1948, Skadden rose to prominence in the ’60s and ’70s by taking on the proxy fights and hostile tender offers that white-shoe law firms deemed “ungentlemanly.”  We leveraged our success in that area to build one of the world’s preeminent law firms, offering clients in every major international financial center solutions to the most challenging legal issues in virtually every area of corporate law.

Our Rankings

The American Lawyer 2015 Global Legal Awards

The American Lawyer announced the winners of its third annual "Global Legal Awards" (July 23, 2015) and Skadden was cited as among the most successful firms, earning four awards.

  • Our role in the Swiss Bank Program, in which the firm has been representing nine Swiss banks in disclosing cross-border activities to the U.S. Department of Justice and Swiss Department of Finance, was recognized as the "Global Dispute of the Year, Investigations."
  • The $2.8 billion going-private acquisition of Giant Interactive Group, in which Skadden represented China-based private equity firm Hony Capital as part of a buyer consortium, was named "Global M&A Deal of the Year, China."
  • Ireland-based Covidien plc's $43 billion acquisition by Medtronic, Inc. was selected as "Global M&A Deal of the Year, Ireland," with Skadden representing Covidien in tax aspects of the deal.
  • In the matter recognized as "Global Pro Bono Dispute of the Year," Skadden represented Indian guest workers in a settlement with marine construction firm Signal International. This was one of the largest series of labor trafficking cases in U.S. history.

According to Am Law, the awards honor "the most distinguished international work" since January 2014.

First-Half 2015 M&A and Corporate Finance League Tables

Skadden has ranked first in M&A league tables published by Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters and mergermarket for announced first-half 2015 global and U.S. announced deals by value. In Thomson Reuters' league tables, Skadden also ranked first by deal value for worldwide completed deals and first by deal value for announced transactions in emerging markets; Brazil, Russia, India and China; Middle East and North Africa; Europe, the Middle East and Africa health care; and U.S. telecommunications. In Bloomberg's league tables, we also ranked first by deal value in announced transactions for Asia Pacific (excluding Japan).

In Bloomberg's first-half 2015 global corporate finance league tables, Skadden ranked first (i) as issuer counsel by deal count for U.S. equity-linked transactions; (ii) as issuer counsel by deal count and volume for U.S. high-yield transactions; and (iii) as manager counsel by deal count and volume for India equity IPOs.

National Law Journal DC 'Litigation Department of the Year'

Skadden has been named Washington, D.C.'s "Litigation Department of the Year" for Products Liability by The National Law Journal (June 29, 2015). The publication noted Skadden's role crafting novel and noteworthy defense strategies for companies such as Altria, Johnson & Johnson and Merck.

Premio Le Fonti and Legalcommunity Italy Desk Awards

Skadden has received two awards recognizing our European attorneys' representation of Italian clients in major cross-border matters: "Law Firm of the Year/Italy Desk" from Premio Le Fonti (June 25, 2015) and "Law Firm of the Year — Italian Commitment" from Legalcommunity (June 30, 2015). These awards follow Skadden's selection as "Italy Desk of the Year" by TopLegal in 2014.
