New York Legal Assistance Group will recognize Skadden and other law firms, organizations and individuals that have provided Superstorm Sandy relief at an October 29 event commemorating the one-year anniversary of the hurricane.
“We are grateful to Skadden and the entire New York legal community. Their support made it possible for NYLAG to respond quickly and effectively to the legal needs of low-income New Yorkers at a time of unprecedented crisis,” said Yisroel Schulman, NYLAG’s president and attorney-in-charge.
Superstorm Sandy flooded NYLAG's downtown headquarters, displacing hundreds of staff and volunteers. The firm provided temporary office space for NYLAG’s Immigrant Protection Unit and LegalHealth practice, which provides free civil legal services to New Yorkers who cannot afford a lawyer. In addition, in the immediate aftermath of the storm, Skadden attorneys functioned as pro bono legal first responders in hard-hit neighborhoods, working with NYLAG attorneys at community sites to provide advice to storm victims.
