Nicholas Lawn focuses on international arbitration and international commercial litigation with particular experience in investor state arbitration and other public international law disputes.


Mr. Lawn has extensive experience handling international arbitration proceedings under the rules of the major arbitral institutions, such as the ICSID, which covered a broad range of commercial and financial issues, including disputes arising out of share sale transactions and JV/shareholder agreements. He has acted as counsel in international disputes in various sectors, including for telecom, energy, mining, industrial and pharmaceutical companies.

In recent years, Mr. Lawn’s practice has focused heavily on India-related disputes, including for a major telecom company in its landmark victory — following an UNCITRAL tribunal — against the Republic of India under the Netherlands-India bilateral investment treaty. He also maintains involvement in disputes around the world, including in Russia/CIS and Latin America. Mr. Lawn also previously spent a year as a foreign associate at a leading law firm in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Mr. Lawn is a solicitor-advocate with rights of audience before all the higher courts of England and Wales. He has been ranked in The Legal 500 and was included in the 2019 International Arbitration Powerlist.
