Michael M. Powell concentrates her practice on complex commercial disputes and securities litigation in both federal and state courts. Ms. Powell has represented companies and executives spanning a wide range of industries in matters pertaining to securities class actions, shareholder derivative lawsuits, corporate governance litigation, antitrust litigation, and intellectual property and commercial contract disputes.

Representative engagements include:

  • representing a growth-stage start-up company in the consumer health products industry in a complex dispute spanning multiple jurisdictions and involving claims for breach of contract, fraud, the misappropriation of intellectual property, and trade libel and false advertising;
  • representing a major financial institution in a nationwide antitrust class action alleging a conspiracy among Visa, MasterCard, and certain banks to fix credit and debit card interchange fees;
  • obtaining dismissal of a securities class action brought by several distressed debt funds against the officers and directors of a regional airline involving alleged violations of the federal securities laws following the airline’s Chapter 11 restructuring;
  • securing the successful resolution of several disputes for a leading New York real estate development company; and
  • obtaining a from-the-bench dismissal of a securities class action brought by shareholders of a bank holding company involving alleged violations of the federal securities laws following the company’s restatement of several years of financials.
  • Ms. Powell also devotes time to pro bono service. Along with representing individual clients in housing and immigration-related matters, Ms. Powell has focused on the provision of counsel regarding litigation strategy to nonprofit entities and the representation of several reproductive justice organizations in impact litigation across the country.

Ms. Powell serves on the steering committee for Skadden’s women’s affinity network and has participated in organizing numerous events, both internal and in collaboration with firm clients, for Skadden’s female attorneys.
