Ross Rymkiewicz focuses on international arbitration and commercial litigation. He has experience of international arbitration proceedings under the rules of all the major arbitral institutions, dealing with disputes covering a broad range of commercial and financial matters.

His notable recent experience includes:

  • representing the interests of an India-focused conglomerate in an ICC arbitration, with related proceedings pending in the High Court of Calcutta;
  • acting for United Capital Partners Group on parallel arbitration and multijurisdictional litigation proceedings relating to interests in VKontakte, Russia’s largest social online networking service. The matter was settled in September 2014 following the US$1.47 billion sale of a stake in VK.Com Limited to Mail.Ru Group Limited;
  • successfully acting for AAR (Alfa, Access & Renova) in its dispute with BP over the oil major’s attempt to form a US$16 billion strategic alliance with Rosneft, the state-owned Russian oil company, for the exploration of oil in the Arctic Circle. The dispute involved obtaining an emergency injunction blocking the deal in the High Court and subsequently obtaining an award from an arbitration tribunal seated in Stockholm that the deal was prohibited under the parties’ shareholders agreement;
  • advising Gilson & Other in relation to their dispute with Ferrexpo Plc in the London High Court. This matter was “Highly Commended” in the Financial Times’ Innovative Lawyers European Report 2013; and
  • acting for an international investment bank in the defence of claims for in excess of US$500 million concerning complex financial products.

Mr. Rymkiewicz also has experience handling complex cross-border investigations and white collar crime issues. For example, he recently represented a leading mining company and certain individuals under a joint retainer in an international corruption investigation and related judicial proceedings in the United States and Geneva.
