Skadden Prevails in $600 Million Pro Bono Dismissal for Planned Parenthood

Skadden, representing Planned Parenthood pro bono, secured a complete dismissal with prejudice in a False Claims Act case against the nonprofit organization in which potential damages exceeded $600 million. On June 25, 2012, Judge A. Howard Matz of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California dismissed the case brought by a former Planned Parenthood employee alleging that Planned Parenthood affiliates in California had overbilled Medicaid for contraceptives during a twelve-year period. Judge Matz held that the plaintiff's fourth pleading attempt had failed to identify any false statements made by the affiliates, and noted the affiliates' "consistent candor and truthfulness" in their dealings with Medicaid.
