Supreme Court Denies Certiorari in New Jersey Sports Gambling Case

Skadden has secured another victory on behalf of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League and Office of the Commissioner of Baseball in their suit against the state of New Jersey to prevent the authorization and licensing of gambling on the sports leagues’ athletic events, which the leagues argued violated the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. On June 23, the U.S. Supreme Court denied certiorari in the case, keeping in place a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit affirming the lower court's decision granting the sports leagues' motion for summary judgment and issuing a permanent injunction preventing New Jersey's proposed sports wagering scheme from taking effect.
