Skadden secured the dismissal for Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc. of multibillion-dollar Federal Wiretap Act claims, and various state law claims, in a putative nationwide class action filed by smartphone consumers. The plaintiffs alleged that smartphone manufacturers improperly intercepted consumer data and communications off their mobile devices using software called Carrier IQ without consumers' knowledge or permission. The claims were dismissed on January 21 by Judge Edward M. Chen of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
