Caixin Media Editor Defeats Motion to Dismiss Defamation Claims

On February 26, Skadden defeated a motion to dismiss defamation and related claims filed by journalist and Caixin Media editor-in-chief Hu Shuli in the Supreme Court for the State of New York, New York County. Ms. Hu sued Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui for libel, libel per se, trade libel, and intentional infliction of emotional distress over statements about Ms. Hu and Caixin Media that Mr. Guo posted on Twitter and other social media sites. Mr. Guo moved to dismiss, arguing, among other things, that Ms. Hu failed to state a claim for relief. However, the court found, among other rulings, that Ms. Hu had adequately plead claims for libel and libel per se.
