Palo Alto Intellectual Property and Technology partner Ken Kumayama was featured in Financier Worldwide as part of the Power Players: Artificial Intelligence 2026 Distinguished Advisers report. In an interview, Mr. Kumayama discussed his work advising on intellectual property, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity and data privacy in a wide array of technology and commercial transactions.
In discussing his approach to tackling complex legal challenges, Mr. Kumayama said, “Good advice needs to be tailored to the client, the business context and the practical realities of the situation. In my experience, clients are usually looking for clear, sound and practical guidance delivered in a straightforward manner.”
To stay current in the IP and technology fields, he reads, listens to podcasts and talks to “engineers, lawyers and business leaders, about the technologies and developments that they find most exciting.” One notable trend is “the apparent resurgence in the strength and value of patents. Legal and policy shifts in the US, Japan, the European Union and elsewhere suggest that patents are likely to play an increasingly important role in both transactions and litigation in the years ahead.”
