Bio

Peter Cheun leads Skadden’s Immigration Impact Project (IIP), an award-winning program that uses a virtual practice group model to leverage the firm’s resources in assisting individuals and families with limited financial means achieve more stable immigration status in the United States. The IIP’s main areas of focus include asylum and post-asylee benefits, relief for survivors of crimes and trafficking, relief under the Violence Against Women Act, special immigrant juvenile status, temporary protected status, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, citizenship and naturalization. The IIP also works on appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals and petitions for review before the U.S. Courts of Appeals, state and federal impact litigation, amicus briefs and regulatory counsel. In addition to leading the firm’s pro bono immigration efforts, Mr. Cheun maintains his own active docket of immigration matters and has appeared before courts and administrative agencies across the country.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Cheun was an associate in Skadden’s Litigation Group, where he focused his practice on complex civil litigation and internal and government investigations. During his time as an associate, he maintained an active pro bono practice focused on immigration and was a founding member of the IIP, while also serving as a member of its Steering Committee. He also volunteered at immigration clinics and workshops throughout the Chicago area and has been recognized for his pro bono efforts by legal services organizations such as the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services and the National Immigrant Justice Center. Prior to law school, Mr. Cheun worked at a Chicago-area immigration law firm, where he gained experience in a wide range of immigration law fields, including employment-based and investor visas, family-based visas, citizenship, and asylum and other humanitarian protection.
