HSBC Issues Panda Bonds in First for Foreign Commercial Banks

Skadden acted as Hong Kong and U.S. counsel to the underwriters in the first-ever issuance by a foreign commercial bank of so-called panda bonds — Chinese renminbi-denominated bonds issued primarily within China by a foreign company. HSBC issued bonds worth 1 billion renminbi (US$157 million).
