As part of Law.com’s “How I Made It” interview series, M&A partner David Niemeyer discussed his career journey at Skadden and the qualities that drive success at a top law firm.
Mr. Niemeyer explained that making partner was not the result of a single transaction or moment, but rather the product of consistent performance, reliability under pressure and the cultivation of strong relationships.
Mentors played a pivotal role in Mr. Niemeyer’s career. “Watching them work, I learned that being a great deal lawyer isn’t just about knowing the law and providing great work product, it’s about leading through uncertainty, communicating clearly under pressure and building trust with clients and your internal teams.”
Mr. Niemeyer shared lessons learned from his own career, including the value of agility and openness to unexpected opportunities. Initially set on becoming a litigator, he pivoted to transactional work early in his career — a decision he now regards as transformative. “Be flexible, open-minded and willing to take big, career-altering chances,” he advised.
