Taxation of Financial Products and Transactions 2014

Washington, D.C. tax partner Alan Swirski spoke at "Taxation of Financial Products and Transactions 2014," a PLI seminar held January 9 in New York. Mr. Swirski participated in a panel discussion on "Tax Controversy in the Financial Products Arena," focusing on such topics as educating judges on the complexity of financial transactions, whether common law doctrines always trump taxpayers’ compliance with the code and regulations, how government litigators and sometimes courts misconstrue internal taxpayer communications, and whether the government views most tax planning as shelter activity.
