On June 25-26, Washington, D.C. tax of counsel Elizabeth Askey and Boston tax counsel Elizabeth Smith spoke at the 18th annual NYU Tax Controversy Forum.

Ms. Askey spoke on the panel “Seeking An Independent Review — The Current State of IRS Appeals and ADR” and discussed the current state of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Independent Office of Appeals, including operational changes, the role of Post Appeals Mediation, and practical strategies for navigating the administrative appeals and American depository receipt (ADR) process amid broader IRS modernization and enforcement efforts.

Ms. Smith spoke on the panel “High Wealth Audits — The Greatest Hits (SECA, AIRCRAFT)” and explored the IRS’s strategic focus on high-income, high-wealth individuals; how the IRS is selecting taxpayers for examination; issues that catch the attention of revenue agents; audit procedures; and best practices for defending a taxpayer facing these inquiries.
