Skadden is pleased to welcome Tim Elliott as a derivatives partner in our Chicago office, where he focuses on financial services regulation and transactional counseling. Mr. Elliott advises exchanges, clearinghouses, trading platforms, proprietary trading firms, brokerages, investment managers and other market participants before the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other federal and global regulatory agencies and self-regulatory organizations.

Mr. Elliott has more than 25 years of experience in the derivatives and securities industries. He most recently served as general counsel for the National Futures Association and, before that, spent over 15 years at CME Group, where he oversaw the legal and regulatory functions of one of the world’s largest derivatives exchange groups as chief regulatory counsel.

He advises financial market participants on regulatory and legislative developments, regulatory business strategy and the formation of federal policy governing derivatives under the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA). Drawing on his experience developing and listing innovative financial products at major exchanges, he provides practical, business-oriented counsel to clients active in the exchange-listed and OTC marketplaces.

“Tim’s arrival reinforces our commitment to providing clients with sophisticated counsel on derivatives, financial markets infrastructure, digital assets, prediction markets and the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape,” said Jessica Hough, global head of Skadden’s regulatory practices. “His experience across exchanges, clearinghouses and self-regulatory organizations gives him a practical perspective that will be invaluable to clients operating in today’s commodities and securities markets.”

Nate Carden, head of the firm’s Chicago office, added, “Tim’s arrival further strengthens our Chicago office and expands our ability to advise financial institutions and market participants on significant regulatory and strategic matters. He brings a rare combination of in-house, exchange and supervisory experience that will be a tremendous asset to our clients.”

Skadden M&A partner David Clark added, “Having worked with Tim over the years, I can attest to the rare combination of practical judgment, deep market insight and steady leadership he brings to every matter. Tim is one of the most operationally seasoned financial services lawyers in the country and will be an outstanding addition to our team.”

“Skadden’s global platform, collaborative culture and premier financial institutions and regulatory capabilities make it an ideal place to continue advising clients across the financial services industry,” said Mr. Elliott. “I’m excited to join the firm and help clients address evolving regulatory demands and market opportunities.”

Mr. Elliott received his J.D. from UCLA School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Illinois.
