Alex Jupp’s practice covers a broad range of U.K. and cross-border tax matters, with a particular focus on the tax aspects of corporate acquisitions, financings and restructurings, group structure planning, corporate relocations, and asset management structures, and resolution of disputes on related matters.

Bio

Mr. Jupp has represented a wide variety of clients in transactional and non-transactional planning, including in:

  • acquisitions and follow-up integrations of strategic targets and businesses within large multinational groups
  • redomiciliation transactions and other public takeover offers
  • restructurings and capital raising for investment banking and asset management groups
  • the design and implementation of asset or multinational corporation group holding structures, joint ventures, tax governance and related planning
  • initial and follow-on offerings of equity, debt and hybrid instruments
  • structuring and setting-up U.K. operations and spin-outs for U.K. and non-U.K.-based enterprises and individuals
  • designing and implementing global management equity plans and advising on U.K. tax aspects of U.S. equity plans
  • the formation and operation of funds and advisory/management businesses
  • structuring for real estate investment in the U.K. and beyond
  • APA and MAP proceedings
  • dispute and pre-dispute cases, particularly on diverted profits tax, transfer pricing matters, cross-border financings and investment structures

Mr. Jupp’s recent representation advising on the acquisition of a British supermarket chain was named a 2021 Impact Deal of the Year by the International Tax Review. He also was named a Next Generation Partner in The Legal 500 UK 2022 and is a member of the team that was named Best International Tax Team at the 2023 Tolley’s Taxation Awards. Additionally, he led the U.K. tax team on a cross-border combination that resulted in Skadden being awarded Transatlantic Tax Team of the Year by The American Lawyer and by Legal Week at the 2018 Transatlantic Legal Awards, as well as International Tax Review’s 2018 Americas Technology and Telecom Tax Deal of the Year. Mr. Jupp is part of the Skadden Tax Group ranked in Band 1 in Chambers Global for Global Tax and named Tax Group of the Year for 2018 and 2019 by Law360. He also is recommended as a leading practitioner in ITR World Tax, Chambers Global, Chambers Europe and Chambers UK, with clients describing him as “able to apply his expertise to particular situations in a timely way,” as well as “very good technically but also practical.” Mr. Jupp also has been named as the leading practitioner in MergerLinks’ Top Tax Lawyers in EMEA rankings.

Mr. Jupp is the immediate past chair of the British branch of the International Fiscal Association (IFA). He was the branch’s secretary from 2016-19, as well as U.K. branch reporter and an organising committee member for the IFA’s 2013 and 2019 global congresses, respectively. He also is a member of the Law Society of England and Wales’ Tax Law Committee and chair of its Income Tax Subcommittee, in addition to serving as a member of the Steering Committee of the Forum on International Tax & Disputes and previously as a member of Working Group 2 within the HM Revenue and Customs’ modernisation project on the taxation of corporate debt and derivative contracts.
